P.SUSHEELA
The song "Pattu Padi Urakkam njaan"
rendered by P.Susheela in 1960 with such great eloquence and emotion
that it enthralled the people from the "God's own country" and has given
her a permanent place in their hearts.
She sang this lullaby with such great
feeling that it had the freshness of a Zephyr, the coolness of the
moonlight and warmth and affection poured into it.
Till Date, this is one of the songs that
have remained the all time favorite among the keralites. Abhayadev’s
lyrics & V.dakshinamoorthy’s composition and P.susheela’s rendition made
this song immortal.
That was a good turning
point in her musical career. She sang songs for many music composers.
Susheela has sung most of the songs in the movie "Bhaarya". The song
where she compares a kerala girl to a river, she has transformed herself
into a typical kerala girl who moves around like a river. Wow!! . What a
splendid performance by her? The credits for the popularity of the song
can be attributed to Devarjan who has composed great music, to vayalar
who has written great Lyrics and the most importantly to the voices of
AM Raja and P.Susheela. She has also sung a song about "Adam and Eve"
for a stage play in the same movie “Adham idha ninakku njan tharunnu”.
Another song “Chandana
pallakkil veedu Kaanan vanna" in the movie "PalattuKOman" a Vadakkan
style song for which the music was composed by MS Baburaj and lyrics
written by P. Baskaran where she was alike a true princess.
In the movie "Ayeesha", she has sung a
song "poomagalaane hO" under the composition of R K Sekhar where she has
portrayed a muslim girl from Malapuram
with great such great eloquence. One more
soft love duet of same style "Muthane ende Muthane" for the same movie.
She has also sung a song for the movie Subaida, "Lailahaah, Illalah",
where she emotes a young child who is away from her mother.
She has also sung a song "Kaadu
kulirunu" for the movie "Nellu" under the musical Composition of Salil
Chaudary where she is blending her voice with the nature.
She has also sung few songs under the
composition of Naushad. In a country where communal riots and religion
disputes seems to be ruling high, a song revering a Hindu God where a
Muslim has penned the lyrics and a muslim, Naushad has composed music
and a Christian, Jesudas given the sound tracks. But there is also
one more commendable instance which would put all the religious fanatics
to shame where despite being a telugu, She has sung a song in Sanskrit,
"Janaki Jane Rama" for which a North Indian Has composed the music and a
keralaite has penned the lyrics. And her efforts were lauded by the
magazene which carried the lines that “Susheela had brought Ramarajya
to earth”.
There was one person who asked
jesus how to pray?. And whatever Jesus told his Disciple was written
down song "Aakshsangalil Irikkum" by vayalar. Susheela sang that song so
beautifully imbibing so much of devotion in her voice that People were
spell bound. These are just small examples of what Susheela has done.
She has sung about all the emotions and
phases of a woman's life, with so much of feeling in her voice. She has
been conferred with so many titles
For her lovely voice. "Priyathama", "Rajashilpi",
"Ezhu Sundara Rathirikal", "manathe mazhamukil ", "kaatil Ilam kaatil",
"paamaram palungu kondu", "ponthenaruvi", "nalacharithrathile",
poovukalkku punyakalam", "pathivayi pournami thorum", “pancha thandram
kadhayile", "kannu neer muthumay", "neeyum vidhavayo", "chethi mantharam",
"bharatham ennal" are some of the feathers in her cap. Her songs had
covered all the aspects of a keralite's life which she has sung by
acquiring the kerala culture.
How could a telugu girl like
her imbibe the nuances of other languages, pronounce the words clearly,
and sing the songs in such an articulate and refined manner That it was
absolutely flawless. An
interviewer asked Susheela how could she get the utterances right in her
songs with perfect phonetics, for which she replied that being a telugu
she did struggle to get the pronounciation correct for some of the
sounds that were unique to malayalam. In her process of being rhetoric,
she practised so hard that her lips were bleeding. But then she went on
and on until she got the pronunciation she wanted. The interviewer was
amazed by her preseverance and wondered, “such a big sacrifice to bring
the nuances of the language and the spirit in the song “.
She had great
underlying expressions, which were just right, no more and no less. When
she sings romantically or a cradles somebody to sleep, her voice becomes
so light that it just melts off. In a song based on a joyous mood, Her
high-spiritedness is evident from Her exuberant and ebullient voice. For
the songs Sung with melancholy themes, u can hear her cry out from her
heart, the feelings Coming from the pit of her stomach. Even In songs
which expresses her anger or Bravery, you can hear the dignity in her
voice. Such was her voice control.
Madhuri, who likes to call
herself as Susheela's ardent fan, describes, Devarajan master was a hard
taskmaster, Who would never give up until he gets the right expression
and right pronunciation. P.Susheela was the main female playback singer
for G.Devarjan.
She has sung for many great
composers like G.Devarajan, V.dakshinamoorhy, MS.baburaj, MB Srinivasan,
vedpal varma, R.k.Sekhar, salil choudry, naushad, msv, pughazendi,
sudharsanam, ummar, k.raghavan, jaya vijaya, reghunath, shyam,
raveendran, KJ joy, Johnson, parur devarajan, Bro.lakshmanan and also
yesudas.
Though she has sung songs written by

Yousufali kecheri, balamurali, thirunaiyanar kurichi, bichu thirumala,
Thikkurissi, sasikala mennon, kanname j, suguthakumari, the best
malayalam songs have come from the trio G.Devarajan, vayalar, Susheela.
She has sung her maximum songs for Devarajaan where vayalar has written
